Our road infrastructure lacks bicycle lanes, which means that cyclists and motor vehicles share the road throughout the island. Additionally, all of our roads accommodate only one lane of traffic heading in each direction. The roads are often winding and hilly with narrow shoulders that make pulling over challenging in some areas.
When motor vehicles find themselves behind groups of cyclists, it is difficult for motorists to pass them. In order to give safe distance to cyclists, motorists need to use the opposite lane when passing. There are limited road segments with enough straight roadway for motorists to do this safely.
Due to these conditions vehicles can become stuck behind groups of bikes for a long time, causing traffic disruption. Unfortunately, there have been attempts to pass unsafely in these situations. With Galiano's growing popularity as a cycling destination, this issue has become more serious.
